Lethbridge, Alberta – Alexandra Crook
Hosting the “Genetically Engineered Food and Human Health” Speaker’s Tour on December 13th,2013
GMO FREE LETHBRIDGE, Albertans for Food Safety and LPIRG are proud to host and present speaker’s Dr.Thierry Vrain and Dr.Shiv Chopra on their cross-Canadian journey to educate and bring awareness to the rising topic of genetically engineered food.
GMO FREE LETHBRIDGE is a local not for profit organization born out of the passion to join the global March Against Monsanto on May 25th of this year. Since then, we have grown into a vibrant and passionate group of almost 700 members. Our vision is to go out into the local community and surrounding areas to bring awareness and education to the public. In the past 6 months, we have attended the Word on The Street Festival, AppleFest and a newly started Green Life Expo; all resulted in greater interest and support from the public. This is very encouraging and we hope to continue to do more in the future and bring more events such as this speaker’s tour to this hub of agriculture that is Southern Alberta. Local farmers, both organic and non-organic have been intrinsically involved in helping to get the word out on GE crops and the hazards that lie within. With their support and knowledge, this area can become one of change towards a more sustainable and healthy future for us all.

All this would not have been possible without the support of our fellow food freedom fighters from Albertans for Food Safety, with whom we are collaborating with on this project and many more in the future. The greater the numbers, the stronger and more positive the power to evoke change for a non-gmo future. Join us on facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/ab4foodsafety/
None of this would have been possible without a venue to host the event and financial support which we have both received from the Lethbridge Public Interest and Research Group. LPIRG is a resource centre for students, to help them engage with social justice and environmental issues. They are a student-funded, student-directed, not-for-profit organization. Through the event grant application we submitted, they have supported this event by helping us obtain a wonderful on campus venue (University of Lethbridge Centre for Sport & Wellness) and have given us financial aid to cover auxiliary event costs.
We are grateful also to Cris Robinson and Mandy Sandbach (local business partners) who hosted a Local and Organic Meet and Greet in October to help promote local and organic producers while showcasing a beautifully decadent array of appetizers and a fest of information for our ears with many wonderfully knowledgeable speakers.

'Special thanks to Harvest Haven for offering to billet the tour crew. Harvest Haven is Lethbridge's only all organic farm and food market. Located just east of Lethbridge; it boasts beautiful examples of organic farming, sustainable building technology and delicious organic food all year round.

Many more within the group to thank for their foot work spreading posters around the area and via word of mouth. Truly this event will be the culmination of what a united community can do to bring awareness to genetically engineered foods.
